Carrie Bradshaw famously said at the end of the series finale of Sex and the City, “The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself.”
That may be true, but if you ask me, the second most challenging relationship you have is the one you have with money.
(Ok, after family and friends, too!)
Money is everywhere and it’s impossible to live life without it. Some say money is the source of all evil. No matter what anyone thinks, for now money is here to stay.
I don’t know about you but I’d rather work with it than against it.
You see, I grew up in a middle class family like many Americans. We didn’t have gobs of money to spend on frivolous things but we had nice vacations and I had everything I needed.
Yet I still found myself wanting more.
I imagined myself living very comfortably with money – maybe even more than comfortably – but I didn’t know how to get there. As I intentionally improved my financial education, my net worth began to climb.
I started making close to $80,000 a year at age 26 – with no advanced degree and just a few years work experience. I started investing in stocks and started my own side hustle.
I didn’t have anyone to guide me but I was intentional about every financial choice I made.
It paid off. While I am not a millionaire today, I am very comfortable with my finances. Ironically, I did all of this with pretty much no guidance by someone else!
As a woman, it’s always been frustrating for me to constantly see men giving out financial advice and creating successful businesses. I wondered : why aren’t more women killing it in finance and business?
The sad reality is that women are far less invested in their financial futures than men. Most days it seems like there are dozens of men for every Sara Blakely or Sophia Amoruso.
That’s why I hope that this little corner of the internet will inspire women to take charge of their financial goals, acquire assets, build businesses, and thrive the way they deserve to!
Welcome to Personal Finance Girl. I’m so glad you are here.
